Humans aren’t the only one’s that can benefit greatly from legalized marijuana. It’s common knowledge that marijuana can relieve the symptoms of ailments such as pain or anxiety in people. However, these benefits can also apply to many of our household animals, and a few companies are making safe, marijuana-infused edibles for our dog and cat.
Studies have shown that cannabinoids like CBD can have anti-inflammatory effects and can help with pain, tumors, skin conditions, seizures, muscle spasms, anxiety and aggression. Pet products’ containing CBD are way below 0.3% THC that means your best friend isn’t getting high but makes them feel really good!
Even though there are numerous reports of pets experiencing relief from using CBD products the FDA still has not approved. The reason for this is there has been little research showing the effectiveness. Why? Scientist and veterinarians have not been able to study marijuana and its benefits freely under the law but thanks to the Agricultural Act of 2014 that was signed by President Obama; states have been able to grow hemp for commercial or research use.
In order to operate in more of a legal grey area, these medicinal companies are deriving extracts from hemp, not marijuana. They extract materials from the stem of the plant, which is still considered cannabis but is allowed to be moved across state lines due to it’s 0.3% trace of THC. By emphasizing the fact that their practices are aimed at healing and treating pets, they can operate with less stigma than many recreational marijuana companies.
It’s important to remember that cannabis treats for pets are not meant to get them high. Rather, the main purpose is to relieve symptoms in older pets or provide pain relief. With no THC and high traces of CBD, these treats can be ideal for treating pain, eating and mood disorders and many other common illnesses suffered by domesticated animals. Cannabis is especially useful for sick animals that have entered their golden years, with issues such as joint pain, arthritis, compromised immune systems, stress, aggression and digestive issues. If you’re looking to keep the fuzziest member of your family safe and sound, cannabis treats maybe be just the ticket, but don’t forget to talk to your vet first.
