Last week we defined Dabbing. Then the question came up how do you take a dab?
Common tools you’ll need include nails, dabbers, rigs, and concentrates, but the list doesn’t stop there. Dabbing also involves containers, cleaning products, torches, and extraction tools for making concentrates.
Taking the Dab
Once the rig is set up and the concentrate of choice is prepared on the dab tool you’re ready to get started. If this is your first time, start off slow. Pick off a pinhead-sized piece of the concentrate with the dab tool. Remember, you can always add more after you smoke. Now that you have your dab tool loaded with concentrate follow these steps:
1. Turn on your torch and aim the flame directly at the nail. After about 30 seconds to 1 minute, the nail will turn red from the heat and be hot enough to start dabbing. If using an e-nail, see the manufacturer’s guidelines for use.
2. Once the nail is hot (glowing red), turn the torch off and place the glass dome over the nail (unless you are using a dome-less nail). It’s recommended to allow quartz nails to cool for 30 to 45 seconds and titanium nails for 10 seconds so that the surface is not too hot for the concentrate. The temperature of the nail should be between 400 and 550 degrees. You don’t want the nail to be too hot or it will burn the concentrate. Pro tip – using lower heat will make the concentrate more flavorful.
3. Take your dab tool with your “pinhead” amount of concentrate and apply it directly to the heated nail inside the dome and inhale slowly. Rotate the dab tool around the nail so you don’t waste any concentrate.
4. Exhale and enjoy the great taste of concentrated cannabis. Pro tip – exhaling slowly can prevent coughing.
*Please note: nails become extremely hot and can cause severe burns. Use caution when handling them and make sure the nail has cooled down before touching it.
